IIT Powai Student Sahil Wakode Dies by Suicide After ChatGPT Exam Row, Protest Erupts
IIT Powai student Sahil Wakode was found dead in his hostel room after an exam-related ChatGPT row. Students allege suspension threats and demand a transparent probe and director's resignation.
The incident triggered tension across the institute, with angry students launching a protest on the campus following the student's death.
IIT administration issued an official statement saying that Wakode had been caught during Friday's examination while allegedly uploading the question paper on ChatGPT through his mobile phone and viewing answers. According to the administration, the student was counselled over the matter and was assured that no harsh disciplinary action would be taken against him.
The institute said the student subsequently returned to his hostel room. Later in the evening, he was found dead inside his room.
Students protest, allege threat of suspension
Students protesting over the incident have rejected the administration's account and alleged that the complete truth was being concealed. The protesters claim that Wakode had been threatened with suspension over the alleged use of unfair means during the examination.
The protesting students further claim that the mental pressure and fear of having his future affected led him to take the extreme step. However, these claims could not be independently verified.
The protesters also said they feel like they are living in a cage on the campus, alleging unnecessary pressure and fear from professors. A large number of students are demanding the resignation of IIT Powai Director Professor Shirish B. Kedare and calling for a transparent investigation into the incident.
IIT Powai Director Shirish B. Kedare has said that he takes moral responsibility for the incident and that accountability will be fixed in the matter. He said, "The moral responsibility for this entire sequence of events is mine, and complete accountability will be fixed in the matter."
However, when directly asked about his resignation, Kedare did not respond.
The incident has intensified concerns among students at IIT Powai, with protesters continuing to demand transparency and accountability over the circumstances surrounding Sahil Wakode's death.
